Hi

Having spent two days researching the diameter of satalite dishes I now presume that what you can receive comes down to how big it is?

We have some channels but wondered if there is a way to get all the uk channels?

Any suggestions would be great as I have a 10 yr old that is ready to kill unless she cathes up on eastenders soon!

Thanx:ph34r:

We have the same problem out there. We are governed by the dish that the communidad has & the programmes they select which more recently has been no english programmes at all.
We recently found about UK Nova. This means that you can download all the English soaps on to your computer.
i signed up to it just before we got back(it's free) & tried it out & downloaded Emmerdale. It was fine I don't fully understand all the in's & outs of it but if you are interested you can PM me & I will endeavour to help you out. I am so glad that we learned about it - only wish that we had found out about it months ago.

If it is only the BBC programmes you want -that does not require such a big dish- You can get BBC Prime through Canal. If you can get a copy of Tips & Info I think you will find an advert in that.

No, we looked into BBc prime but it is a bit poo for what you get, we ideally want 1,2,3 and 4 if poss.

Hi,
Yes basically the bigger the dish along the better the weaker signals will be picked up. 2-2.5cm is usually the biggest dish before you lose contact with the satelite due to the natural curve on the earth!

So my 1.80 wont be big enough then?? any way round it??

We were told when we were enquiring - that you needed a 3 metre Dish for Sky.

Our dish picks up about 60% of our sky channels....just need the rest

Your 1.8 should be ok ( 2 to 3 would be better but not practical ) the important bits are the LNB , ( the chunky thing on the end of the stick connected to the dish ) and the sensitivity of the reciever . (The Grundig reciever supplied in the UK by Sky will not work for instance ) You say you are getting some Sky channels , but these may not be from the UK satalite , as there are several Astra and Eurobird satalites ( almost in the same part of the sky ) which is why you cannot get BBC1 etc. So I suggest you try and move the dish slightly , and see if you can pick up one of the other satalites . Theres quiet a art to all this so its a bit hard to do in a text box . Otherwise have a chat with one of the guys who advertise in Tips N info , but it will cost.

the guys in tips and info just want to flog us a huge dish.....none of them seem to think moving our exsisting dish will work...all about getting pennies for them!

turn your dish into a motorised set up - sat shops should be able to do this for you. If you also have (or get) a european digi box - such as echostar - but there are many other makes - this will enable you to view many other satellites. I get @ 16 satellites to look at here in UK with my motorised set up. Sky isn't the only one by a long chalk. Most popular sats are Hotbird, Astra, Thor - but lots more.

If you want to learn all about satellite tv and what you can watch & where - visit this site and join (free) :- http://www.satdudez.org/forum/index.php

and also this site here gives you what's watchable on each sat - very good info - _http://www.kudos.byethost15.com/freeguide

While researching satellite reception in fringe areas, I came across this info regarding receivers (Not based on my personal experience):-

RECEIVERS FOR GOOD FRINGE RECEPTION
Panasonic TU-DSB 20
Panasonic TU-DSB 30
Amstrad DRX 100
Amstrad DRX 200 (newer model, same tuner as the Panasonic 30)
Grundig 310/2
Pace 2200 (anyone using this model?)
Pace mini box

NO GOOD IN FRINGE AREAS
Pace 2500s
Panasonic TUD 31
Sony Receivers

I have been successful in picking up reception in one area where the professionals failed, not because I was better than them, but was willing to put a lot of time into it. Yes the size of dish is very important, but, from my limited experience, the quality of the dish matters also. I tried and failed to get an adaquate signal on one occasion with a 1.2m dish. However when I slackened the arm that supports the LNB (That is the unit that points towards the centre of the dish) and moved it about a little, I obtained and excellent signal. The LNB was not pointing towards the focal point on the dish. Changed to a quality 0.9m dish solved the problem.
Have not tried picking up a signal in GC, but given the distance, I'd expect that a much bigger dish is required. See this link which suggest a 2.4m (that's about 8 feet in the old money) http://www.astra2d.com/spain.htm Scan down the page for forum members comments in the Canaria's
I always use a meter (obtained from Aldi, about €10) to detect the strength of the signal.
Quality LNB also important

Been doing some research , and basically since Sky turned off the south beam of the Astra 2D satalite ( breach of EU licencing agreements ) it is extremely difficult to pick up BBC etc. without an enormous dish and even then the signal will tend to fail in the mornings and evenings ( because UK channels are sent at reduced power on the north beam ) . However all is not lost , I am currently trying to get hold of a particular reciever ( very sensetive ) and will try it next time I'm over .( Added bonus is it will receive from all the other Astra , Hotbird and Eurobird Satalites ) So watch this space

We saw in the newspaper yesterday something about a box and wireless reciever that can send TV etc via ADSL and only about 150 pounds to buy. I think made by Sony to be used with the PSP but can be used for the TV. Anyone had any experience of these.

We were told about UK Nova just a couple of days before we returned to the UK.You need ADSL - you then need to join UK Nove(Free) & then Also download Azureus(also free) You can download loads of English programmes - News,Soaps Reality TV, Documentaries. I tried it out before we came home & it was perfect. I have downloaded a few times since we got home. The only thing is that you do need to leave your computer on to let others seed the programmes so that you keep up your rating.
We are not allowed to have our own dish so this solves the problem for us. Also you do need to be careful before getting a large dish. I know of a case in PDI where a denuncia was served on him & he had to get rid of his system.

easyview,i think thats the name, guys bring you a arial and box, they then come every month with a new box,you get,itv,bbc1 and2,ch4,40euro a month.my daughter had it,i know quite a few with it,ask carla or peter at pickwicks for more imfo. john.

The clue is " they come every month with a new box "

This is the highly illegal practice of re-selling .

Yes it works , but consider what other activities are subsidised on the back of this scam ?

mary

I was going to ask why would they come every month with a new box. Seemed odd to me.
I still stick by Digital plus. They may only have re runs but after you've been out of the country for a while, the reruns are new to you anyway.
We get BBC world and Sky news. The only thing we dont always get is the footie in English, but as i said before it helped to learn spanish

well,i know plenty of people who are happy with it,ones who have lived there years and tried various other ways of recieving brit programes,if you recieve the things you want, good.
as for other activities subsidised,do we know what any company subsidises to.i am led to believe they are brits who run it,dont know for sure, but as i say, iknow plenty of satified customers.
i myself recieve sky news and bbc parliament, plus about 40 other channels just with a normal size dish and sky box.john.

generally these things are 'schemed' to keep you on the hook so to speak - so there is a programmed time for your set / card to work up to - then you have to pay to have it 'recharged' - changing the box is one such way - in others it is the card that has a time limit before it needs reprogramming

jonjboy
15th June 2006, 11:36 AM
thats right, the box is reprogrammed every month so they just bring you one ready done,2 minutes to swap it,job done,40 euro.john.

We had easyview for several months and never had a problem apart from when we had heavy rain the picture was poor..

The 2 guys live in Tenerfie but are originally from Worksop and like Jonjboy said, they do replace your box but this is done every 3 months. You also pay 3 months subscription at a time...

I think this is a reasonable price to pay if you are an avid soap fan or hugely miss UK tv.

tell them tough luck they have lost the channels now they can do without the TV. Tell them there is lots to do without sitting watching a square screen.
Then get it fixed but dont tell them. LOL.

Just give the Easyview guys a call; they are very often in Gran Canaria and will sort it no problem.

All fixed, just needed the codes to lock the frequency which I found.

Maybe makes me sad but I like to sit and watch a square screen sometimes too!!
