Hi all.
Just wondering what the used car market is like in gran canaria. Are there plenty of dealers, or is there a short supply. Cost wise, is it cheaper to buy a used car in gran canaria, compared to the uk. Any one recomend a place to buy.
Thanks in advance.

Well when i first appeared on the island 15 years ago the second hand car dealers didn't really exist! just the odd one! Now we are flooded with them(and plenty of "Arthur Daley" characters also involved! First you are best to buy a car over here if you plan to live here, don't bring a right hand drive from the uk or you will be plagued with problems!! sell it then move here!! I bought a Fiat Punto Cabriolet here for a very reasonable price here and that was from an x "Rentacar" office.Nearly all the used cars you see in the dealers are bought in from Avis,Hertz etc where they buy in bulk.So it's best to just look about when you are here. There is a new law in Spain now where the Garage selling the second hand car now has to offer you a years warranty. You Must also change the name of ownership when you buy the car(garages normally incude this in the price.)Many Brits who live here and buy a car do not change the name and it means that they ARE NOT the legal owner of the vehicle!!! I see this probelm so many times a year!!!
Road tax is about 50 euros a year and to fill my car up with petrol costs 27 euros.
Hope this helps!!!
Marcus(just in from a very pleasant sunny afternoon on the beach viewers 26 degrees!!):glare:

Thanks marcus. Your answer has helped a lot. We will be careful who we buy from. We did think bringing our right hand drive car would cause problems with getting used to driving on the right hand side of the road. We will be selling ours and buy out there. Didnt realise car tax was that cheap, great news.
Thanks again marcus.

Does anyone know roughly how much a half decent 4x4 would cost? and how difficult they are to get hold of?

There was a Mitsubishi Montero long wheel base advertised in Tips and info in January for 3,000 euros. Have a look at the website for an idea. www.tipsandinfo.com
