I will keep bringing this to the fore- Please be aware you can get melanoma of the eye. Although it does not spread like other cancers - it could mean losing your sight. Please Please wear sunglasses.

Yes thats a terrible thing, I once read an article once that someone was showing holiday photographs, and in one the little boy on the photograph his eye appeared to have a white spot in the pupil, and the person looking at the photographs, was a medical person, and told the mother to take the child straight away to the doctors. It was cancer of the eye poor thing.Apparently it shows up on photographs although you cant see it just by looking at the person.

Great post and great advice, I'm always onto my Mrs about wearing sunglasses, her usual retort on a semi cloudy day is, its not that sunny'! maybe we should stop calling them 'sun glasses' and use the phrase eye protection'.
Cheers all

thanks - I didnot know about the eyes. I always keep my sunglasses on mainly because I have terrible ezcema and the sun seems to trigger it off round my eyes.

I will tell you this - a true story - just so you know how strongly I feel about this. I had conjuctivitis of the eye many years ago & never like the sun in my eyes after that.
Christmas 2004 we were out for the day in Las Palmas - I thought I had a fly in front of me & was busy swatting it away. A few minutes later It was still bothering me & remarked that the b....y thing was following me up the road - a few minutes later I realised it couldn't be a fly & asked my husband if I had something in my eye - he looked & said it was fine. A few more minutes & I was asking him if I had a blob of mascara on my eyelash - no it was fine. When we returned to our apartment it was still bothering me so I looked for myself . I noticed my pupil had changed shape. When we returned to the UK I saw my GP - he referred me to my optician - who gravely told me I had melanoma of the eye. He then gave me a letter to take back to my GP. The next day I was at the hospital & was told that I was very lucky as we had a speciallist at the hospital who was expert in this field. I had to see him the following day & I am still being monitored. I went through a very worrying time but it would seem that it is not cancer in my case - merely a mole. I have to see the specialist again in September but as there is no change in it I am hopeful that I will be discharged. But I know of 2 people here in Ryde that have had it & lost their eye.
So I would add once again ----Remember Sunglasses are as important as Suntan lotion. Keep Safe Folks!!!!
I have done the Race for Life for the last four years but the last 2 it has meant a lot more to me.

Thanks for that. What really staggers me is the amount of people that don't know about it. The only people aware of it were the people who had it & their friends & relations. As I said in my last post in my case it looks as if it was a false alarm - however I will not take any risks. And I make as many people aware of the fact as possible.
