Bit of a follow-on to the "More fun Needed" post.
I totally agree with the majority of that post but at the same time unless the pests are being barred (via their IP Addresses) then they will always return and try and mix it up and spoil things.
People being ....people.... will always be attracted to a slagging match and a bit of controversy. They may not want to take part in it themselves but they'll certainly want to watch its progress.
Let's face it - our most watched TV programs...primarily the Soaps.....are full of constant fighting and bickering. Our parliament has been on the radio and TV for years because people want to see and hear the debates.
We are all different and our opinions vary according to such basic things as our age, location we live in and our social class to name but a few.
Sure there's an etiquette on most forums and theres certain subjects that are labelled as taboo subjects due to the many varied and strong views people have about them.
Please don't get me wrong - I'm not suggesting we promote bickering and petty name calling! Far from it! Just an acceptance that debating and puting your opinion across is inevitable.
This is just an idea obviously and feel free to shoot me down in flames but how about a seperate area within "Some Other Stuff" where people can debate those touchy/sensitive subjects? Minus of course the personal insults!!
Any posts from other areas which develop into a debate (which often happens) could be moved to that area and allowed to continue rather than the thread being closed. (Unless it's got personal and childish of course!)
I think it would:
* Encourage members to communicate in an adult-like manner,
* Provide members with "a specific area" for
......** justifying their own opinions
......** sourcing alternative opinions .........and
......** for debating.
* Generate an honesty and transparency leading to a greater level of respect for each others views.
* It would also help us all get to know each other a whole lot better as we'll be able to read about the things that rattle our cages and the reasons behind it. Thus creating an understanding/empathy amongst members.
Anyway, this new area could be called "The Ring" - in connection with a Debating Ring, Boxing Ring or Bull Ring even. LOL
Yeah there's more fun needed on the forum for sure but we also need a more balanced blend of communication whereby debates and dis-agreements amongst members are given a home and allowed to run their course.
If these debates/dis-agreements are cut-off prior to an acceptance of each party's opinions then nothing has been concluded and bad feelings will only continue to fester.
What do you think? Can anyone understand what I'm "trying" to say?
