Hi. Has anyone got any idea how much a portable airconditioning unit cost on gran canaria. Im trying to decide if i should buy one here, and ship it over with the rest of our stuff. I can get a 12000btu unit in the uk for £200. The modes on it are cool, dehumidify, and fan. Only 3 weeks left for the big move now. :packed:

I don't know how much they are in GC. But Owen reccommended a store called Media market in Siete Palmas. We checked it out a couple of weeks ago & it's a great store.
I don't know how your spanish is but you could maybe get the number from Owen & give them a call.

Thanks angie, will look into that, our spanish is very basic at the moment, so not worth us calling them. We have only had the linguaphone spanish course for 3 years now, must say the dust has built up on it, LOL.

I think they are about 200 euros but it depends on how pwerful etc. Ours was a cheap one but the dehumidify isnt very good on it. If you are south, then you dont really need that bit.
I would wait and get one here. Loads more choice and as angie said - Media Marky in Siete Palmas has all electrical goods at very reasonable prices

hi

having been shown the system in the clinic last year by dr. paul i would advise to buy across in gc. as that system although a small unit was more than adequate for the job it was doing and about £40-50 cheaper than the portable systems here in the uk then you have the cost of sending across to gc. i checked them out when we came home a good local builder with a core cutter will be able to fit in a day without any damage to the building. not sure about the dehumidyfier side of it but think marys answered that part.

I've got one that I am selling! We got full air-conditioning installed this summer so don't need the portable any more. I was going to wait until summer and ask a fortune for it but it's just getting in the way. It's 9000 btu.

Thanks mary & rab, your both really helpfull with usefull imformation, no matter what asked, you always seem to have the answer, we would be lost with out you, and the members of the forum. Hi owen, arriving on the 25th, would be interested in your unit, just hope it doesnt extract money from my wallet, as much as it extracts the hot air from the room.LOL. If you could pm us a price, would be gratefull.

a 9000 btu. will operate at an airspace of about 20m2 quite happily and a 12000 btu. is about 25m2 5m2 more.

AH HA, i thought it was sqm, as in the floor measurment. Didnt realise it was the actual air space of the room they worked it out in, but thinking about it, it makes sense, i wasnt very god at school rab, lol. Thanks for posting that rab, will see how one does, then proberbly will need another for upstairs.
cheers Linda.

Bought one last summer for about €340.....12000BTU apartment area is 36m2 (floor area) with a floor to ceiling height of 2.5m. Total volume of air cooled is therefore 90m3. We found this adaquate in July....apartment south-facing....if north-facing, less is required. Includes timer and remote control. Be aware that they are noisier than fixed models. May be difficult to sleep with if in the same room. Purchased at El Campo, exit 7 as you travel north from the airport towards Las Palmas. Looked for one last March, very little choice and no bargains. However there was a very large choice last June with many special offers. As you will use it for only about 2 months of the year, consider 2nd hand also. Also check energy rating as some are not very effecient.

no it is floorspace linda just the way i worded it sorry about that airspace is worked in volume which is lxbxh so in a room 5mtrx4mtrx2.5mtr =50m3 that is what a 9000btu. will operate at very comfortable
apologies

From personal experience the unit will definatly only cool one room and you'll definately need to move it upstairs if you want to be up there also.

we have a portable unit in the north. We only use it about twice a year. Its very noisy and the tv has to be on full blast to hear it over the top.
In the south, we have proper fitted aircon - which is a must in the south. Obviously not possible if you are renting. Its marvellous and we had it on almost continuously from august (when we opened there) until about October.
Aircon can affect the sinuses quite badly as it dries them out, so be aware if you have sinus problems

Can someone help me please. A friend of mine wants to charge his air conditioner with gas. Do you know of someone who can provide this service? He lives near Puerto Rico and ideally would prefer to find someone in the locality if that was possible, but is open to all suggestions.

I'll look up the number of the guy who installed some of our units and get back to you
