Hi All

The chatbox appears to be running slowly again despite the introduction of a 24 hour archive. If you use the chatbox could you please try to lay off using lots of/large smilies to see if this makes a difference in speed.

Thanks

the most common cause of shoutboxes and systems running slowly are either viruses or spyware getting in to the system. which can happen through arcade games this seems the most likely cause of what is happening here and a test of anti spyware and anti virus on the host server will determine this.

another is running to many programes at the same time on your own system eg how often do you browse the shoutbox while at the same time be viewing other threads and even maybe doing a little work on your machine at the same time.

I very much doubt that smilies themselves would clog up the shoutbox especially after introducing the 24 hour archive but I will respect the decision to avoid using them but I must point out that I have never used the arcade since my machine detected spyware and viruses on a few games, which give Owen his due I passed this info on to him and he immediately removed these games but how many more are still lurking releasing all this into the host server or your own machine.

Whilst many members are waiting on shouts going in to the box I often have entered 2-3 shouts before their reply comes in that tells me they either have spyware, viruses or too many programes sitting at the bottom of their taskbar running at the same time on their machine.
hope this helps

I forgot to also mention that as one of the regulars on the shoutbox I have to agree with other members that it is not very nice when in the middle of a good conversation all the smilies start firing in.

Guess im one of the more guilty ones so I promise to behave in future lol.

I think people need to understand how these types off emoticons work. When you place one in the chat box , you are not downloading the picture , you are downloading the link to the picture
( e.g httX://wwX.websmileys.com/sm/aliens/hae36.gif link changed to prevent connection )

Everythime a refresh is done , the forum server has to go and get the picture using the link . More pictures more refreshes , the slower it runs because of all the connections and time required.

Rab is correct about trojans and viruses , and that is for the server administrator to manage , the smiley issue is down to us , the users .

Yes there fun , but lets all just be sensible. The smilies provided on the forum are pictures on the server and will not have the same effect.

yes dan is correct you have to download the smilie to your system as posting direct is as dan says. best way is not to use these links

I got rid of Norton antivirus and my machine works much faster...if smiles are not to be used then why have them on the shout box...one or two of us found a new smillie link and went i bit overboard but as i've said the novelty wore off.I think someone must of got a bit jealous because we could
http://smileydatabase.com/s/250.gif and http://smileydatabase.com/s/932.gif and http://www.websmileys.com/sm/cartoon/508.gifand they couldn't LOL :) the shoutbox was much much slower i few weeks ago and now it's fine

HandyMan you are right. I've recently started forking ut quite a bit of dosh on a monthly basis to have a dedicated server for canaryforum so connecting to canaryforum is nice and fast as I don't share the server with hundreds upon hundreds of other websites (or any other websites actually).

If someone links to an external image from another website and especially one that specialises in images - the chatbox here stops until that image is loaded and if it's on a slow server, that means slow chatbox :(

Don't know if I could be classed as a much of a contributor but have noticed that one or two major forum players have gone AWOL recently.

Cheers all :boozy:

A lot of people were moaning about not having a shoutbox. Owen went to great lengths and cost to get one...and now few people bother to use it..hang your heads in shame...

People are still using the shoutbox Wullie and everyone appreciates
what Owen does on this site. We wouldnt be here otherwise.

There are times when people have other more important things to
do than sit on the shoutbox.
