well todays rates are the lowest ever looks like we are in big big trouble and this government is all to blame
average rates today are between 1.20 to 1.23 euros to the pound.
this can cause masses of us guys to think about heading to the usa this year boycotting europe.:sadguy:

Just 15 months I was getting 1-52 euro/pound in P.Rico, this is a very dramatic decline in value and will only push people to more attractive exchange rates in other parts of the holiday world. It will almost certainly increase the use of all-inclusive resorts within the euro-zone. With the current economic climate of high oil prices and the looming major depression
over in the States I can't see any improvement in this low rate for the foreseeable future, it can only spell bad news for the coming holiday season !!!

try telling that to families that are struggling to get holidays at the moment who are gonna find it even harder with the present exchange rates.
never mind as you have so much then maybe you can maybe sponsor a family cos as you say you cant take it with you to meet your maker :)

I used them all the time 2 years back when i was sending loads of money over to GC. The rates are very good on cash over £5000 but,not for holiday money. The Halifax were better than them then:eyebrow: Now thats saying something!!!

was doing a little research on the web and!!!!!!!!!!!! I may be wrong but I think the yanks have a lot to do with the present poor pound-euro exchange rates.
due to the strong pound to the dollar and euro against the dollar the yanks are now wheeling and dealing with the euro as it is so strong at the moment making it more stronger therefore weakening the pound even further and they say they are our allies. food for thought is it not.

Your high street bank, may seem the obvious choice for converting your cash or savings, however they will probably offer you the current Tourist Rate rather than the Commercial Rate offered by specialist foreign exchange companies. Therefore using a foreign exchange company with more favourable rates, you potentially get a much better currency deal for your pound.
Due to the constant changing of the currency market, exchange rates are extremely volatile. This can leave you vulnerable to poor exchange rates when converting your money. However, if you use a specialised currency or foreign exchange company, there are several options available to help you secure better rates
Spot transactions
These are simply a buy now pay now option, where the currency is purchased immediately at that days Commercial Rate. This type of transaction is ideal for those who require their currency immediately. However, if you can allow a little time before your payments are required it is better to purchase currency using a forward transaction.
Forward transactions
The buy now, pay later option. A forward transaction will allow you to reserve a rate up to 18 months in advance of your requirement for the currency. A small deposit will hold your selected rate until the currency contract matures. This option allows you to protect against the risk of a drop in the exchange rate, and also gives you the security of having the currency you require at a guaranteed cost, regardless of fluctuations.
Limit orders
A limit order allows you to place a currency order for a desired exchange rate. This has the advantage of protecting you against negative shifts in the exchange rate, while still allowing you to benefit from positive changes to the exchange rate. Your order is placed into the currency market and an automatic purchase is made once the rate hits the specified exchange rate.
Regular payments
When you have purchased your overseas property, it is possible that you will be required to make payments in a foreign currency. This could be to make mortgage payments, pay for maintenance or transfer your pension or salary. Again using a reputable foreign exchange company can simplify this process and reduce costs, by setting up monthly payments subject to more competitive rates.

who is going to go out to their locals and pay double the price if they can sit in the hotels drinking for free yes it will soon be £1=1euro sooner rather than later they got away with the petrol price hike without a whimper so nothing to stop this government taking us all the way now to bankruptcy

We are self catering when we go so I guess if the exchange rate keeps falling we will be cooking more food instead of dining out:sadguy:. But you never know by July it might improve a bit not holding my breath though. The only thing that I can see is that the bars and restaurants may be forced to lower thier prices if the want any customers. :cry:But I agree with Rab this country just rolls over and lets the government do what it wants a strong euro suits them as more people will stay in this country this year as they cannot afford to travel I know if I hadn't booked and paid for mine that I would have considered cancelling/not going this year:veryangry: But hey ho It will be lovely and sunny by the pool anyway lol

I always budgeted on 1euro = 70 pence, now it's risen to 80 pence, does'nt seem a lot but put in terms of hundreds, your 700 hundred pounds now becomes 800 pounds quite a hike when put that way. Yes I know these are "approx" values but reasonably accurate anyway, Other destinations outside of the "Eurozone" are now becoming far more attractive for holidays with the U.S.A. being a much more affordable destination. It's just the longhaul flights that are to me virtually unbearable that are so off putting. I think that during the demise of the pounds value against the euro, it's only just around the corner for Britain to join into "Eurozone" !!!

even though the euro is strong and your not getting as much for your pound, it's still cheaper here than in Britain 1.50e on average for a pint's not bad! and you can still eat out without going skint, as the cost of living is much lower,so not as cheap as last year but still good value... have a great time......

if possible just try and save a few extra quid to make up for the poor exchange rate but as bfrank says its still cheaper over in pr than it is here as for the nationwide we payed with our card in jan direct to the riu and received 1.36 euro direct payment and the rate over here was only around 1.25 at the time just open an account its well worth it.

Hi. What is the rate over there? please dont say more than 1.22 to the Pound, as I have just changed ALL of our money over! That financial advisor scared me yesterday and the thought that it could drop even more is even scarier!
I am glad that we are going to Poland in June for a few days...unless I am more ignorant than I thought and the PLN against the Pound will drop too?
After all said and done; GC is still cheaper than back at home and it can work out more to buy in the supermarkets, than it is to eat out at a restaurant.

there´s a lot of disgruntlement recently on the poor exchange rate, so i´d like a bit of feedback from the holiday makers of this beautiful island:-
if you was to visit my establishment(and this is not a plug for my bar as we do not take pound notes) and pay in pound notes with say for example an exchange rate of 1.4 euros to the pound i.e a round of drinks costing 10 euros would cost you 7.15 pounds, would that create an interest???????

That's a helluva difference when you think about it. Certainly doesn't help any European holiday destinatons, and especially the Canaries as flights etc are so expensive.
I've noticed A/I holidays in mainland Spain/Balearics can be got for the around same price as a "cheap" holiday over there. When your a family on a tight budget, it's a no-brainer really.

Plenty of "Caja Canarias" cashpoints around P.Rico, Main bank is located on the lower level of the main centre half way up on your left from the front. I use the one right on the front left hand corner of the centre as I can park right outside of it. There's also one right by the front Spar near the beach, also one by the harbour just along from Flannigan's Apple Irish pub, several others dotted around the place. At the airport when you arrive turn right after coming out through the arrivals hall and walk down going right past the car hire desks, you'll then find one in the wall on your right !!!!

Just take a small amount as you will get a better rate over there.
Yesterday I got some for starters, just until I get there. The rate here was 1.1550 pretty c**p....I'll be at the atm in P.R. using my Nationwide card on Tuesday.

I managed to get 1.23 in Thomas Cook's today. I was changing over £1000 though... got some Euros and put the rest on one of their Cash Passport Cards.
My Nationwide account didn't get opened on time, so I was shopping around trying to figure out what was going to be best for me. I told the girl in Thomas Cook's that I knew I could get 1.23 in resort, so she matched it. ;)

Post Office in my town was only giving 1.19. But even so, I totally agree that it seems like KT was stung pretty badly with a rate of 1.15!!!

To keep this 'on topic' to the euro exchange rate, I have moved the other posts to the Living and working in the Canaries section under 'Comparing the good and bad bits about living in GC'. Not a great title but all I could come up with.

I've been hunting for the best rate for my hol at the end of this month and have got what I found to be the best...the Post Office were offering 1.229 to the pound on Saturday so have ordered online and the currency is being delivered FREE tomorrow (as it's over 500 quids worth).
Pretty ok I thought considering how dire the rates are these days...:blue:

Ive always found you get a better rate in resort, we only ever take enough to get us through the first evening and change the rest over there.

I've just applied for a flexaccount at nationwide. What is the limit for the amount that you can withdraw (abroad) at an ATM in one day?

Sorry Santeg can't answer that one, but I usually take out sums of up to 300 euros at a time if that's any help. When doing a larger shop or purchasing more expensive gifts or even an expensive meal out I always use my Nationwide visa debit card. Be aware that some shops/restaurants will sometimes ask for a passport for security. You will "ALWAYS GET A BETTER RATE" when using this card. I'm still astounded by the insecurity of the Brits abroad when using cards. Just keep all your receipts for checking against your account when you return home. For the record when we were out in the Algarve a few years ago my wife paid a restaurant bill with her Mastercard and on our return home the restaurant had put the transaction through "TWICE". As my wife had kept the original receipt she photocopied it and sent it off as instructed by her bank and her account was re-credited with the amount taken !!!!!!

You can take out £300 pounds so what ever that is in euro's on that day hope that helps.

We did purchase fags and tobacco once on the card in the shop on the top floor of the Europa Center but we found that when we checked the receipt he had charged us a mark up for the card transaction ( CREDIT CARD ) although it was a debit card, so we lost any discount. So I would suggest you check first if there is any fee.
