View Full Version : How to Kill Tourism

well done the tour operators! As we have kids we have to holiday in the 6 week holidays.
Last year a day flight cost me £275 to Tenerife as we booked 11 months in advance.
This year we are going to Malta, booked the flights last september for £180 each.
We are looking to book next years flights for Gran Canaria. Best price so far is £370 for a night flight as we have to fly on a Saturday. We have to pay extra for the pleasure of taking hold luggage and paying using a card (any card). It costs even more if we want meals, sitting together and they want ALL the money up front when we book.
We could take the risk of waiting but apparentley the number of flights for next year has been reduced. This means the prices will go up.
Imagine the executive meeting when they decide how to kill off tourism in the Canaries.
Exec 1 'how can we encourage tourism, maximise profit and build a long term customer base'.
Exec 2 'Lets make sure we take account of the credit crunch'
Big Boss Exec 'thats it then. Put the prices up, rip the ba****ds off at every available opportunity and then blame the scottish bloke at number 10'.
At least it will be quiet if we do come to Gran Canaria.

Just a suggestion, as you live in Staffs, get a quote from Iberia for your flights. It's just a shoot down the M6 and M1 to Heathrow, choise of half a dozen flights on a Saturday, if you want an early flight, you could book a hotel with parking the night before. We use the service all the time, it's 2 hours longer but the times are really good.

from staffs would be m6, m42, m40, m25, m4, m1 takes you miles out your way from that side of the country!

The route wasn't the most important part of the post. The point is it's all major roads whichever you use, and it will be cheaper to fly Iberia than the charter companies.

i've looked at the various options, Easyjet, Iberia etc and they all work out to similiar prices or the savings are not worth the time and aggro.
The point i'm making is this.
Major tourism providers, (tour companies and airlines) all seem to show the same contempt as British Leyland had for the customer. Never mind the quality just charge them what we like and dont worry about the long term.
This means they are happy to see the Canaries die as a tourism destination and divert customers to other destinations for an inflated price. In the medium term the islands and residents will suffer.
Then the asset strippers will move in make a killing and leave others to rebuild in the long term.
We as consumers lose out 3 ways. We lose the reasons why we go there now. We are forced to go elsewhere for a number of years, not because we want to but because we have no choice. Then if we want to go back after the asset strip/rebuild scenario we have to pay more.

It's not just the flights that's going up with a bang:no:
We've booked the same apartments as we did last September and the price difference in 12 months 120 Euros and this the best we could do.
Then on top of that you have a price increase in taxi transfers from the airport. One of the threads on here has a return taxi with Owen at 125 Euros. This was only 90 Euros this time last year.
Ok we’ll be back again next year but there’s not much chance of us squeezing 2 trips a year in at these prices were getting at the moment.
Moneys getting tighter and everyone what’s more of it, looks like I’ll have to start selling my body. lol:wink::blush:

Here's a few tips on how to save money on your hols..........
1. Go on holiday with someone that you don't like. That way you won't have to pay for "seats together" on flight.
2. Wear lots of layers of clothing on the journey. (Will also come in handy on note 3). No having to pay to take luggage.
3. Your layers of clothing will keep you warm on the plane. They seem to turn the air con to freezing now they charge you for a pillow and blanket. No need to buy afore mentioned.... you can also use clothes as pillow.
4. Take a packed lunch onboard aircraft instead of paying extra for "meal". At least you know that you'll like what you're eating.
Hope these tips help
Has anyone else got any ideas of how to save money on ridiculously priced holidays??
I wonder what the tour companies will come up with next to milk as much as they can out of us?......... Paying for using the loo on plane??

1. Can't stand the missus ,but she insists that we sit together ( )
2. She can only wear one pair of shoes at a time so have to pay excess luggage for the other 60 pairs.
3.No pillow and blanket...she may get the wrong idea.
4.Packed lunch. Peanut butter sandwiches give me wind...don't won't to upset the passangers..

as much as it galls me here are more suggestions as to how they can rip us off
walking to or from the airplane, or using the airbridge, or bus.
sitting down while on the plane.
having a pilot, navigator or flight engineer.
carrying your own suitcase at any time.
standing, walking or sitting in the sun, fresh air or sea water.
eating drinking or breathing while abroad
speaking while abroad
going home
I thought they may charge for taking advice, talking to or actually seeing a holiday rep but then i realised (based on past experience) the cost of printing the bill would outway any potential income form such a rediculous charge
