    Catastrophy on Gran Canaria

Since 2 days fires are raging on Gran Canaria. Up until now 3200ha has been affected, and the wind and high temperatures of the south are making the firefighting nearly impossible. A Forest guard has been arrested, and has admitted starting the fire.

Can you elaborate? Or tell me, please, where I can follow news about the islands (Spanish language o.k.) on the web as it is happening, I have been unsuccessful sofar in finding anything except the newspapers, and I haven't found them good for Gran Canaria, at least.

A terrible situation. As in La Gomera. I haven't had any news from there today, I have friends there but they are on vacation.

    Thanks.

Saw it on the news just now. Up to 8.000 ha this evening here in Gran Canaria. Calima until Wednesday, probably. Canarias7 say it is calima, I hear that some say it is sirocco (not sure about the spelling). Any idea which?

I put my thermometer (for humans..., the other that I brought from Iceland shows up to 30 degrees, no more) outside my door on a table in the shadow. It went up to over 39 degrees and it is still that if not more, and it is past midnight! Highest temperature that I have ever lived, if I manage to live... ... or perhaps if this goes on much longer :packed: but not with a smile

My understanding is - calima is the hazy hot that we have at the mo' and sirocco gives us the hot wind/air - which we have at the moment. Sirocco is when the winds are blowing from Africa.
Now is the time to go on a boat trip as its much fresher at sea or even on the beach

    From GCI

The term Sirocco (sometimes also spelled Scirocco) is an all-inclusive name given to hot and subsequently humid southeast to southwest winds originating as hot, dry desert-air over Northern Africa, flowing northward into the southern Mediterranean basin.

Siroccos occur in advance of surface and upper level depressions moving eastward across the southern Mediterranean Sea or northern Africa. These cyclones originate either over North Africa or sometimes south of the Alps, primarily in the Gulf of Genoa in the latter case.

    And:

    The Calima

    Location: Canary Islands

The Calima is a hot, oppressing dust and sand-laden, southerly to southeasterly, sometimes easterly wind in the Canary Islands region. It is particulary prevalent in winter. Like it's 'big brother' the Sirocco the calima blows out of a high-pressure over Northern Africa and the Sahara and is normally drawn northwards ahead of a passing cold-front or depression north of the archipelago. It's fine yellowish-brown dust is even creeping through doors and windows. Outside visibility often reduces to null.

Sometimes a rare small depression forming south-west of the Canary Islands increase wind-speed and intensity of a calima event. Such storms and the rising warm and humid air can lift dust 5,000 m or so above the Atlantic blanketing hundreds of thousands of square miles of the eastern Atlantic Ocean with a dense cloud of Saharan sand, many times reaching as far as the Carribean.

This unnormal hot and humid calima is often associated with fog and patchy drizzle and the Canary people are heavily suffering from respiratory problems. Conditions could become even so bad that they might force public life and transport to a stand-still. On January 8, 2002, the international airport of Santa Cruz had to be closed because visibility dropped to less than 50 meters.
