    Bbc Prime

    Hello again!
Now those of you thinking of coming to live in Gran Canaria and would like to watch some "British Television" then i have a recommendation for you.
When moving over here and trying to adapt to a more "spanish" way of life it is always rather nice to still watch a bit of "British TV" now and again. If like myself you are not interested the slightest in "football"or any kind of "sport"(i don't mind the odd round of crazy golf though whilst doing impressions of the great Golf comontator "Peter Aliss"on the way round.)
The BBC have a special channel which is for people who would like to watch a british channel whilst living in Europe.
BBC Prime contains no sport but does have "Childrens Channels, discovery, and you can even watch "Eastenders" and "casualty"(with the wonderful "Harry Harper"(calm down ladies!)Holby City and "Top of the pops" and loads more!
Ideal for those cool Canarian winter nights.........

We are dependant on what the communidad select. So all we get is Sky News & BBC World. Otherwise it is Spanish or German programmes. We tend to take as many DVD's as possible for the nights when we just want to chill out indoors.

We have Digital plus - we get sky sports, sky news, eurosport, all the kids channels, people and arts(for changing rooms, Hustle, programme about the girl who works on the buses etc) Fox, Hollywood, all films.
    Small dish.
    Dont get eastenders etc though

    Question

How much does it cost to get BBC Prime?
Are there underlyrics/text? My mum cannot hear very well so it would help our neighbours if there are!
Do you know the text tv code for the spanish and german channels so that we can get underlyrics on those too? If it is even possible..

    Is it a monthly payment?

From memory, I believe it was in the region of €75.00 per annum.

My last post was incorrect. The following are the up-to-date rates

BBC Prime is an encrypted channel and you will need to buy a subscription to receive a smart card, which will enable you to receive the channel. Subscriptions are annual and currently cost £85, plus VAT at 17.5% if you live in the European Union. There is also an initial £30 (+VAT) smartcard administration fee.

You will also have to install your own satellite dish and satellite receiver.
See tipsandinfo.com for suppliers. As I have not used any of them, I cannot recommend one. Maybe some other member can help in that regard.

Information required for the Satellite dish installer

    Satellite: Hotbird 6
    Frequency: 11,116 MHz
    Polarisation: Vertical
    Symbol Rate: 27,500
    FEC: 3/4

We have big problems here. We have no English programmes at all (except Skysport) When we bought the apartment about 2 years ago we had 3 or 4 English programmes. The communidad selects the programmes & they obviously don't rate English programmes high on the list. We asked if we would be allowed to have our own dish & we were told no!!!! It is times like this you wish you spoke fluent Spanish so you could have a good go. It wouldn't be so bad if we could at least get 1 news channel. Thank god we have the internet,DVD's & Power FM

We live ina communidad as well. The communidad has digital plus dish. We have a box and get al the film channels, sky news, sport channels. Films you can put into version original with or without spanish subtitles. I get extreme makeover, changing rooms, house..... lots of different Brit stuff. Ask your communidad if they have this system

Thank you so much for all your replies:wub:

It does seem cheaper in the beginning to send for some DVD's with films and tv series, documetaries and so on? - or sometimes rent?

With buying satelite dish, the thingy for the roof, the channels you want and so on... Maybe we should wait until we know exactly what we want and need.. I noticed I do not watch tv as much on GC as I do in Denmark.

(Have just got the dvd with series 1 and 2 of "Keeping up appearences" with the mail:D )
