Cueva
The caves are in the north of the island and part of an extensive system of underground caves and tunnels, many of which are not open to the public. In fact, the 7km of caves make it one of the longest in the world. Throughout history, Lanzarote has suffered numerous attacks from pirates and nationals from all over Europe. The caves served as a perfect hiding place for the Guanches whilst the island was under attack. Close by are the caves of Jameos.
The caves were formed during the erruption of Monte Corona, some 4,000 years ago. As the flowing lava headed towards the sea, the roof hardened, lava continued flowing underneath annd trapped gases eventually exploded, all combining to form the spectacular caves that exhist today.
In 1964, 2 km of the caves were opened to the public. Cleverly placed lighting was added to help highten the beauty of the caves. As you climb down into the caves and marvel at the rock formations, be ready to see the cave's secrate!!??
