The César Manrique Foundation

César Manrique's influence on Lanzarote is incredible and continues today and will no doubt in the future. An architect and artist who's travelled and worked throughout the world, he settled in Lanzarote and decided it was his mission to enhance the beauty of the island and prevent it from being spoilt (after seeing first-hand what New York looked like!). Nice job he's done too! Manrique's work covers some of the main attractions on the island including the caves in the north and Marador del Rio. One thing you can't miss if you travel from one part of the island to the other is his fascination with "wind toys", huge steel structures centered in many roundabouts on the island and as the name suggests, moving with the wind.

Thanks to Manrique, there are strict construction laws in place that prevent the construction of high-rise buildings, stipulate the colours that can be used to paint them (basically white and green), there's no publicly-placed advertising (such as billboards) and until recently, a ban on large increases in the number of tourist beds on the island.

Another one of his pet hates was traffic (not much of that on Lanzarote either, driving is definately a pleasure) but fate would have it that César Manrique died in a car accident in 1992.

The César Manrique Foundation houses some of his own works along with his collection by artists such as Picasso, Miró, Chillida and Klee. The Foundation is located in the home that the artist lived in, situated in Taro de Tahiche. The home itself is created in and around volcanic caves, built in 1968. Below are 5 rooms, complete with open-air pool (I know - "below" and "open air" - hard to explain but go and see it for yourself) all built into natural "bubbles" created by the erruptions in 1730-36. Outside of the house and upper level is tastefully created by the artist himself. The Foundation, created in 1992, is a non profit private institution, receiving more than 300.000 visitors a year.
