Timanfaya National Park

The National Park of Timanfaya is an area - 51 square kilometers in size - of volcanos, known locally as "Montañas de Fuego" (Fire Mountains) where visitors can witness a variety of geological phenomena and experiments as well as tour the park by bus.

The most notorious event on the island was also one of the world's most devastating and longest volcanic eruptions which lasted from September 1730 until April 1736. Within just 8 square kilometres, 25 (or was it 30 - it depends who you ask!) volcanos erupted. The area where the eruptions took place is now Timanfaya National Park. The priest of one of the nearby villages, Yaiza, wrote an account of this event - part can be read here. Further (and so far the last) eruptions took place in 1824.

Whilst temperatures just a few meters underground reach 600 degrees celcius, surface rocks in parts are too hot to touch.

The "Visitors Center" is usually the first port of call once you arrive, it is here that you can appreciate the force of the volcanos via various experiments performed by the staff such as burning dried grass in a hole dug just a meter deep, or water exploding from the ground as it's poured into one of the few pipes sunk into the ground.

The tour by bus ('Ruta de los Volcanes') is another main attraction here. During the journey, visitors can witness the numerous lines of volcanoes, the 'tongues' of lava, the 'hornitos' and the volcanic tubes. The buses travel through and around the volcanos themselves for around 10km along narrow paths; leaving every 15 minutes or so. Spectacular scenery indeed.

The other main attraction here is the "El Diablo" restaurant where food is grilled over the natural heat provided by the volcano whilst offering the visitor panoramic views of the park.
