Fuerteventura Weather

Fuerteventura and most parts of all the Canary islands receive two different winds, the "lower trade winds" which blow at an altitude of less than 1,500 meters. These cooler, more moist winds blow all year round, coming in from the Atlantic ocean. The hotter, dry trade winds coming in from Africa blow above 1,500 meters, again constant all year round though a little gustier during the summer months. The hotter winds prevent the cooler, moist winds from forming rain clouds over most of the islands, this being the reason we have little rain here. The main cause of rains here are Atlantic storms, most likely to arrive between November and March but still so rare and brief so as not to spoil the islands reputation of being a sunny paradise all year round. When the storms do arrive, they are most likely to hit the north and higher parts of the islands, leaving the south virtually unaffected. Fuerteventura, being close to the Sahara, often receives more of the hotter trade winds than the cooler ones, making raind and a cooler, humid climate even less likely here whatever the time of year.

The trade winds block or break down the climate the islands would otherwise have, being off the coast of the Sahara desert. Without the winds, the heat can be stifling, reaching 40C and more and on occasion, the breeze coming from the African coast can bring with it particles of sand from the desert, making the climate here seem foggy or if the sand is dense enough, orange!

As with neighbouring Lanzarote, being closer to the Sahara coastline than the rest of the islands, Fuerteventura receives less cooler winds, less rain and more of the African climate. Upon first sight, most of the island seems barren and dessert-like. It's in the center and very north of the island where the climate is a little kinder on the vegitation.
