Cruz de Tejeda

CRUZ DE TEJEDA - is a free and open area of the island. It's centrally located and up in the mountains.
The most scenic part of Gran Canaria is found in the almost 2,000 meters up in the centre of the island on and around mount Tejeda. Alpine forests, the island's reservoirs, rocky mountains and the alpine climate are just some of the reasons to experience a day out to Tejeda. The village of Tejeda itself seems to survive the tourist trade without altering its buildings and the local lace and weaving trade here still continues. Sample typical Canarian dishes at either of the village's two restaurants, ride the Spanish donkey or just marvel at the views from here where down below you see clouds aswell as other small villages and the pine forests. Close by is "Roque Nublo",a natural rock formation that stands like a statue where the ancient Gaunche people used to worship.

The journey up here should take you through the clouds on some days but beware of the changeable weather, which can often be damp or raining. Snow is not uncommon here during the winter though just 40km away people still soak up the sun on the island's beaches. You'll pass several reservoirs getting up here, whichever direction you travel in. To gain better access to their shores and travel through the forests you'll need to be travelling by jeep with an official guide who is licensed to take these paths, (they're not roads- just paths!). A normal driving license won't suffice and warning signs are posted at the paths you can't take so stick to the roads.

Several days a week there is a Jeep Safari tour into these mountains. Costing around €33 ptas per adult and € 28 per child (including lunch), several jeeps will drive together, each holding 8 passengers, and go through thebest parts of the mountains, including the paths that normal cars and licenseholders can't take. Book it as soon as you arrive if you're interested in that, as it's a very popular excursion. If you want to book your place on a jeep safari before you get here, email canaryforum@gmail.com and let me know!
